Eddie Bo's Funky Funky New Orleans: Rare & Unreleased New Orleans Funk 1968 – 1971
Although Eddie Bo is long known as a funky peformer in his own right, during his years on the New Orleans soul scene, he also spent a good deal of time producing records for other artists. This long-overdue compilation brings together a funky funky batch of recordings that Eddie did with other artists in the early 70s, plus a few under his own name that did not appear on the other Funky Delicacies comp of his work. The sound is heavy heavy funk all the way through — with lots of nice basslines and hard drums — and although some of the cuts have appeared on other comps, there's more than enough new stuff here to keep your ears fresh!

Bo Diddley - Drive By Bo Diddley: Tales From The Funk Dimension 1970-1973
Bo Diddley we already love you — but this set gives us another reason why! Although Bo's probably best known for his classic R&B work of the late 50s and early 60s, but during the 70s he also managed to cut some massively funky albums for Chess — working in the blues revival/funk turnover sound that was pioneered in the Cadet Concept studios with some of the label's classic artists of earlier years. The grooves on this set are amazing — heavy funk all the way, and filled with a ripplingly strong guitar sound over heavy drums and bass — still handled with the same offbeat sense of humor that we love in Bo's older work, but retuned nicely for the hip heavy sound of the 70s!

Dennis Coffey - Hair & Thangs
A stunner! You'll probably never find this rare first Dennis Coffey album in the original, so you owe it to yourself to snatch up this funky funky reissue of stripped down guitar breakbeat jams! The record has Coffey playing his trademark fuzzy guitar, along with his early group that included the legendary Lyman Woodard on organ and Andrew Davis on drums.

Baby Huey - The Baby Huey Story: The Living Legend
Fantastic! The lost link in the Chicago soul scene of the 60s was Baby Huey — and he was a pretty darn big link too, if you've ever seen him in pictures! Weighing in at about 300 pounds, Baby Huey was sort of a rockin' soul star who played clubs on both sides of the city, to audiences of all types — working in a party-styled blend of funk, rock, and soul that was one of the most powerful grooves going down in the Windy City at the time! Huey sadly passed away at a very young age, leaving only this full album as his legacy.

VA - Calypsoul 70 - Caribbean Soul & Calypso Crossover 1969-1979
A cool collection of funky grooves from the Caribbean — tracks that take a strong influence from American soul and funk, then blend it heavily with hip rhythms from the islands! A few of the names here are familiar, but most are relatively obscure — and put together, the tunes on the set illustrate a hugely under-tapped scene that's filled with wonderful tunes — tracks awash in jazzy rhythms, skittish percussion, and a range of styles that move past much more familiar Jamaican sounds from down south. Drums here are often quite heavy, and matched by other percussion as well — not to mention jagged guitar lines and bass bits that really send the whole thing home!

Isaac Hayes - Truck Turner [OST] (1974)
Massive work from Isaac Hayes — a hard and heavy soundtrack that we like even more than his classic work on Shaft! Unlike Shaft, Ike actually starred in the film Truck Turner — which may be one reason why he brought his full game to the table for the record — and scored a batch of badass tunes that still stand with some of the best funky soundtrack work of the 70s! The rhythm's especially hard on the best cuts — really crackling with a lot of intensity, and a stark, hard funky sound that's made the record a favorite of beatheads for years!

Isaac Hayes - Tough Guys [OST] (1974)
One of Isaac Hayes' richest soundtracks — deeper and more complicated than the groove of Shaft and Truck Turner, and filled with some great tunes that glow with color, life, and imagination — showing an Isaac Hayes that almost seems to be moving beyond the usual blackploitation groove! The album sports 2 really classic tunes — the title theme "Tough Guys", and the classic "Hung Up On My Baby" — both of which have a solidly funky feel that will more than please the usual soundtrack beathead crowd. But overall, the other tunes twist and turn in a delightful mix of modes — expanding on the soulful territory Ike first explored in his original soundtracks, and offering up a great range of moods and emotion. The album's got some especially great chromatic guitar work.

The Mohawks - Champ (1968)
One of the heaviest albums ever made — and a monstrous bit of organ funk that never gets old! The Mohawks were a one-off studio group led by arranger/keyboardist Alan Hawkshaw (the "hawk" in the Mohawk name), and they're working here in a mad London mix of beat group grooving, soul jazz Hammond, West End seediness, and even a bit of early rocksteady! The grooves are tremendous — a sweet blend of heavy bass, tight drums, and hard-wailing organ — never quitting all the way through, and served up on a set of nearly all original tunes! Includes the classic "The Champ", sampled more times than we can count, and a blueprint for early hip hop.

Brothers Unlimited - Who's For The Young (1970)
A excellent album of southern funk — and darn rare, too! We know almost nothing about the Brothers, but they're a 14 piece combo with a tight ensemble funk sound that clearly shows roots of both the Memphis and Muscle Shoals scenes where the album was recorded! There's a lot of fuzzy guitar, almost in a Detroit Westbound mode — but the band's also got a sweetly southern funk style, with lots of organ bubbling underneath the tracks, punctuated by some pretty tight drum work that really makes the best cuts groove nicely in a more righteous take on the Stax/Volt sound of the time. A really wild one — and the kind of record that makes your jaw drop when you realize that some lucky A&R guy was actually able to get an underground soul album released by a major label!

Monk Higgins - Little Mama (1972)
An excellent batch of soulful and funky instrumental tracks — super-dope 70s work from funky arranger Monk Higgins! The album grooves in the best blacksploitation soundtrack mode — as Monk plays tenor sax and organ in the set, over slinky stepping arrangements that feature Paul Humphrey on drums, and Freddy Robinson on guitars — all coming together with Monk in a sweet LA style of early 70s funk! The groove is funky, yet laidback at the same time — and with some soulful backing vocals behind the instrumentation on a number of cuts — really the perfect sort of approach for a hip crime or action soundtrack.

Monk Higgins - Heavyweight (1972)
Quite possibly the best album ever from funky maestro Monk Higgins! The record's got some of his tighest work of the time — with plenty of tight breaks, nice keyboards, and soulful sax riffs — and Monk is going full-out on the arrangements, in the manner that he used for his best late Blue Note work with The Three Sounds or Blue Mitchell. The group's listed as "The Specialties" on the cover, and they vamp along nicely, like some of Monk's funky groups from the late 60s funky 45 days

Ananda Shankar - Ananda Shankar & His Music (1975)
One of the greatest albums ever by one of the most compelling figures in Indian music! Ananda Shankar's been chronicled elsewhere and often on these pages — so by this point, you probably already know that he's a renegade pioneer who combined funky grooves with sitars and tablas, forging a whole new sound in Indian music that's still having quite a bit of influence today. This 1975 album is a stunner — way more open-minded than his other album for Reprise (which we've also got on reissue!), with tracks that push the funky groove a lot farther than you'd expect, swirling percussion, organ, guitar, tablas, moog, and sitar all together into an unbelievable sound that will leave you breathless!

Ananda Shankar - Ananda Shankar (1970)
Insanely fantastic! Ananda Shankar was one of the hippest sitar players of the 60s — an artist who was not only steeped in the strongest traditions of Indian music heard in other more mainstream players, but one who also had a keen ear for modder and funkier grooves of the time! This rare American set by Ananda is one of his greatest ever — a brilliant mix of funky backings and tripped out sitar work — done in a way that blends together soul, funk, and rock — all given a particularly cool Indian twist. The vibe is very much in the best funky Bollywood style — but was actually done years before most Bollywood funk

Spirit Of Atlanta - The Burning Of Atlanta (1973)
Totally great — and a record you probably know nothing about! The album's one of the greatest ever to come out of the Hotlanta scene of the 70s — a tight batch of funk tracks with a heck of a lot of guitar. The set was produced by Tommy Stewart, of "Bump and Hustle" fame — and it's got an unusual style that's equally appealing to fans of funk, and fans of clubbier music — lots of tight playing, hard riffing, and longer grooves that soar along with impeccable grace. The whole thing's almost like the classic Wood Brass & Steel album — but with some rougher edges that make it even better!

Incredible Bongo Band - Bongo Rock: The Story Of Incredible Bongo Band
The Incredible Bongo Band, also known as Michael Viner's Incredible Bongo Band, was a project started by Michael Viner, a record artist manager and executive at MGM Records. The band's output consisted of instrumental music in the funk genre, characterised by the prominence of bongo drums and also conga drums.
Although the band released two albums, 1973's Bongo Rock and 1974's Return of the Incredible Bongo Band, the band is best known for its cover of "Apache", a song originally made popular by The Shadows. This record languished in relative obscurity until the late 1970s, when it was adopted by early hip-hop artists, including pioneering DJs Kool Herc and Grandmaster Flash, for the uncommonly long percussion break in the middle of the song. Subsequently, many of the Incredible Bongo Band's other releases were sampled by hip-hop producers, and the "Apache" break remains a staple of many producers in drum and bass.
